Earthy, Sky and Everything In Between: Vic Falls and Hwange In A Day

Imagine yourself soaring above the African landscape, marvelling at one of nature’s most breathtaking wonders before being whisked off to once-in-a-lifetime encounters in an incredible wildlife sanctuary. Join me as I recount the extraordinary moments I experienced on the Full Day Helicopter Adventure to Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls and Hwange National Park with Hideaways Africa. It was a life-changing experience indeed…

As I sat in the helicopter, buckled up and ready for an adventure, I could hardly contain my excitement. My Zimbabwe safari was about to begin – a helicopter ride over the magnificent Victoria Falls, followed by a game drive in the famed Hwange National Park. The rotor blades whirred to life, and we slowly lifted off the ground, ascending into the clear blue African sky.

Approaching the mighty Vic Falls, the sheer power and beauty were beyond words. A fine mist rose from the cascading waters, creating a magical atmosphere. I leaned closer to the window, eagerly taking in the view of the various sections. The Main Falls, or “The Smoke that Thunders”, dominated the landscape while the Devil’s Cataract, the Eastern Cataract and the Horseshoe Falls all contributed to the grandeur and splendour of this natural wonder. The sight was so overwhelming that it felt like I had been transported to another world entirely.

From above, the mighty Zambezi River could be seen flowing with relentless force, carving its way through the deep gorge. Rainbows danced in the air, their vibrant colours adding to the already surreal experience. As we circled around, the pilot skilfully manoeuvred the helicopter, offering breathtaking views from different angles and the immense scale of the falls became even more apparent. It was a truly humbling sight.

Then it was time to leave Victoria Falls behind. Filled with a sense of adventure, I couldn’t wait to discover the wild and wonderful treasures of Hwange National Park. The road stretched out in a southern direction, winding its way through the picturesque countryside. It was a quintessential African panorama, straight out of a nature documentary.

The journey led me to Nantwich Lodge, a safari gem situated in the northwest corner of Hwange, from where we would depart to explore this wildlife haven on a game drive. Getting on board the safari vehicle with one of the experienced local guides in the driver’s seat, I could sense something memorable was about to happen. And I was right!

Hwange teemed with a myriad of species, big and small, haired and feathered. The park’s famous and majestic elephants gracefully roamed the plains, towering giraffes elegantly nibbled on the treetops and zebras dotted the landscape. The sky was alive with countless colourful bird species.

The highlight of the game drive was an unforgettable encounter with a pride of lions. As we approached, the magnificent creatures lazily raised their heads, their piercing golden eyes locking into ours. Their presence commanded respect and I couldn’t help but marvel at their raw power and regal demeanour.

Our guide’s knowledge of the park was astounding. He shared captivating stories about the animals we encountered, their behaviours and their role in maintaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem

All too soon this unbelievable day of exploration and discovery, excitement and awe came to an end. It was time to leave Hwange National Park and return to Victoria Falls. On the drive back, I couldn’t help but reflect on my life-changing experience.

Witnessing Victoria Falls from the air left me in awe of nature’s immense power and beauty. Exploring Hwange National Park brought me face-to-face with Africa’s unique wildlife. Both in the end reminded me of the boundless wonders our planet has to offer but even more so, about the importance of conservation and our responsibility to protect these natural treasures.
