One of the most striking buildings in the Cambodian capital is Phnom Penh Railway Station. It was built in 1932 and restored in 2010.

It is located on the intersection between Monivong Boulevard and Russian Boulevard. Passenger services are limited and it is advised to check when official passenger trains are running.

History of Phnom Penh Railway Station

The station was originally constructed in 1932 and serviced a direct line from Phnom Penh to Battambang. It was closed from 2005 to 2016.

Railway Service

There are several routes operating out of Phnom Penh Railway Station.

The main one is from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville, which stops at Takeo, Kep and Kampot and departs at 7am arriving in Shanoukville at 12:20pm. The second is an airport shuttle. The third is a service to Poipet on the Thai border, via Battambang. Further details can be found here.

It is best to check what services are in fact running before you plan your trip, as Cambodian train are notoriously unreliable.

A recent addition to the station is a mini mall, with a handful of stores to browse and some coffee shops and cafes to stock up on snacks and drinks for the journey ahead.

More than a Station

The station is more than just a route from point A to B. One of the stand out properties in the capital, you can easily combine a visit here with other nearby attractions, such as the Central Market, which opened in 1937, just a few years after the railway station, and is of a similar architectural style.
