Kansas City has long been associated with jazz, but the city’s creative story extends well beyond its musical heritage. This September, the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District will become the setting for a three-day celebration of contemporary art, music, fashion, food and culture at the 18th & Vine Arts Festival.
Taking place from 25–27 September 2026, the festival brings together artists, musicians, designers, food vendors and creative entrepreneurs, with more than 100 artists and vendors expected to showcase their work. At its heart is a marketplace supporting local Black and Brown artists and makers, making this as much an opportunity to meet the people shaping Kansas City’s contemporary creative scene as it is a weekend of entertainment.
The 2026 theme is Neo-Soul Fusion – Where Music Meets Art, exploring the connections between classic soul, jazz, blues and hip-hop and contemporary Black creativity. The result is deliberately eclectic, with visual art, fashion, live performance and food all sharing the same stage.
Fashion takes centre stage
The festival opens on Friday evening with Rock the Runway, where fashion, music and cultural expression collide.
Eight designers will compete for a US$1,000 prize, presenting collections influenced by the Neo-Soul Fusion theme. The evening also features live performances, DJs, fashion and beauty showcases and an artist marketplace.
For visitors, it offers a different introduction to 18th & Vine from the traditional jazz-club experience, demonstrating how the district’s cultural legacy continues to evolve rather than simply being preserved in aspic.
Live music on the Vine
Saturday is devoted to music and identity, with Live on the Vine, the festival’s artist showcase competition, at its centre.
Vocalists, musicians, rappers, poets and spoken-word artists compete across genres including R&B, soul, hip-hop, gospel, jazz and acoustic music. Alongside the performances are live painting, interactive art installations, DJs, youth activities and the artist marketplace.
It is also a chance to discover emerging Kansas City talent rather than simply turning up for familiar names. The festival describes Live on the Vine as a platform providing artists with exposure, mentorship and opportunities alongside its competition prizes.
Sunday gets soulful
The final day takes a more relaxed turn with Soulful Sunday, bringing food, culture and community together.
Food trucks and culinary experiences sit alongside live entertainment, community activities, family programming and the continuing artist marketplace. For visitors interested in experiencing a side of Kansas City beyond its better-known tourist attractions, this is arguably the most immersive part of the weekend, with food and creativity providing a route into the city’s communities and culture.
And there is a bigger story behind the entertainment. The festival is organised by the 18th & Vine Arts Festival Foundation, a non-profit organisation whose work extends beyond the three-day event to supporting artists, youth, entrepreneurship and cultural programming.
The location is significant, too. The Historic 18th & Vine District is one of the places where Kansas City’s Black cultural history and its jazz heritage remain particularly visible. The festival’s emphasis on contemporary creativity provides a way of experiencing that legacy as something living and evolving rather than simply something to be remembered.

The 18th & Vine Arts Festival 2026 takes place in Kansas City’s Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District from 25–27 September.
Friday runs from 5pm–10pm, Saturday from 10am–10pm, and Sunday from 10am–5pm according to the festival’s current ticket information. A day pass is currently US$10, while a weekend pass costs US$20. Day-of prices are advertised as US$15 and US$25 respectively.
