Every August, the Serbian city of Zrenjanin comes alive for Dani Piva, or Beer Days, one of the country’s biggest and most popular beer festivals. Drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors over five days, the free event combines excellent beer with live music, local cuisine and a welcoming atmosphere, making it one of the highlights of the summer festival calendar in Serbia.
What to Expect at Dani Piva in Zrenjanin
Although beer is the main attraction, Dani Piva is much more than a traditional beer festival. The streets and squares of Zrenjanin are transformed into open-air venues hosting concerts by leading Serbian and Balkan artists, folk performances, street entertainers and cultural displays.
Visitors can sample beers from Serbian breweries alongside international brands, while food stalls serve local Vojvodina specialities including grilled meats, sausages, cheeses and traditional pastries. Artisan markets showcase regional crafts, and families will find plenty of children’s entertainment, sporting events and workshops throughout the festival.
As evening falls, the atmosphere becomes even more vibrant, with live music on multiple stages, outdoor cafés and thousands of people enjoying the city’s relaxed summer ambience.
The History of Dani Piva Beer Festival
The origins of Dani Piva lie in Zrenjanin’s long brewing tradition. Beer has been brewed in the city since 1745, when the first brewery opened in what was then known as Veliki Bečkerek. Brewing quickly became one of the city’s defining industries and an important part of local life.
The festival itself was established in 1986 to celebrate 240 years of brewing in the city. In its early years, horse-drawn carts travelled through the streets distributing free beer while musicians, actors and poets entertained the crowds, creating a celebration inspired by the traditional fairs once held in the region.
Over the decades, Dani Piva has grown into one of Serbia’s largest festivals while retaining its strong local character and community spirit.
