The largest free jazz festival in the world, the Detroit Jazz Festival has been held over the US Labor Day weekend for more than 40 years.

Each year the international jazz festival has upwards of 60 performers representing the diversity of the music genre. Expect the unexpected with late night jams.

The city of Detroit plays centre stage for a series of concerts on multiple stages. This is a time when the whole city gets to party.

The festival is not just a few day event as the organisers also provide educational programmes as well as concerts throughout the year allowing up and coming artists to perform with mentors.

About the Festival

It was founded by Robert McCabe and the Detroit Renaissance in 1980, with the aim of bringing world class music to all members of the city’s society. It is managed by the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation, who are trusted with preserving its mission.

This year will see Detroit legends Regina Carter, Louis Hayes and Kenny Garrett, who have all joined the 2023 NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship, perform with artists from around the globe. You can find the complete Detroit Jazz Festival schedule here.
