Edinburgh Festival 2019

Featuring 2,750 artists from 31 countries, the Edinburgh Festival, or Edinburgh International Festival, kicks off on 2 August, 2019. This year’s programme features some of the best and emerging contemporary artists from around the world.
Last year resident theatrical company Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord takes centre stage with three original pieces, including a re-working of The Beggar’s Opera, while Peter Brook presents his new play The Prisoner, and Katie Mitchell has adapted Duras’ La Maladie de la Mort. There will also be a staging of Beckett’s classic Waiting for Godot by the acclaimed Druid Theatre company.

For the more classically tuned, performances of two Rossini operas, The Barber of Seville and La Cenerentola compete with Christine Goerke playing Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Siegfried for your attention. While the Usher Hall hosts Sir Andrew Davis conducting Humperdink’s Hansel and Gretel.
In total, there are 48 concerts and recitals featuring the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Simon Rattle, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra amongst others with Dvořák’s Requiem and Mahler’s Eight Symphony featuring.

Akram Khan will choreograph Xenos, which deals with the experiences of soldiers in the First World War, as well as Kadamati, with 500 members of the local community taking to the steps of Holyrood Palace.
The Edinburgh Festival 2019 concludes with a spectacular firework display on 26 August, when in excess of 400,000 fireworks will illuminate the skies against Edinburgh Castle, to the music of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
