Madeira is preparing to welcome one of its most vibrant annual events as Carnival 2026 takes over the island from 11 to 22 February. During ten days of festivities, the streets of Funchal and surrounding towns will come alive with music, colour and theatrical flair, offering visitors a warm and culturally rich escape from the European winter.
Blending exuberant spectacle with local tradition, Madeira Carnival delivers a celebratory atmosphere that feels both international and unmistakably Madeiran — all set against the island’s mild Atlantic climate.
Grand Allegoric Parade Lights Up Funchal on 14 February
The undisputed highlight of the programme is the Grand Allegoric Parade, which takes place on Saturday 14 February. As night falls, Funchal’s streets are transformed into a dazzling stage for one of the island’s most impressive performances.
More than 1,500 performers take part, dancing alongside elaborately decorated floats and wearing intricately designed costumes that shimmer beneath the city lights. Set to pulsating rhythms, the evening parade delivers a high-energy spectacle that rivals some of the world’s most famous Carnival celebrations, while retaining a uniquely Atlantic island character.

Slapstick Parade Brings Satire and Humour on Carnival Tuesday
While glamour defines the weekend, Carnival Tuesday on 17 February belongs to humour and creativity. The Cortejo Trapalhão, or Slapstick Parade, is a playful and satirical procession inspired by spontaneous parades that emerged in the early 20th century.
Open to locals and visitors alike, the parade celebrates inventive costume design, with participants drawing inspiration from social and political satire, traditional themes and character-based disguises. Individuals and groups compete across several categories, with cash prizes awarded to the most imaginative entries, adding a lively edge to the festivities.
Carnival Market Showcases Madeira’s Food Wine and Local Culture
Running throughout the celebrations from 11 to 22 February, the Carnival Market takes over the Central Walkway of Avenida Arriaga, one of Funchal’s liveliest streets. Framed by cafés, shops and cultural venues, the market offers a relaxed way to experience Carnival between parades.
Visitors can browse stalls selling regional produce such as fresh fruit, sugarcane honey and the island’s emblematic Madeira Wine, alongside traditional Carnival delicacies. Decorated with colourful motifs and accompanied by music, the market reflects the welcoming and joyful spirit at the heart of Madeira’s Carnival.

Why Carnival 2026 Is the Perfect Time to Visit Madeira
With its combination of cultural depth, playful creativity and warm winter weather, Madeira Carnival 2026 offers an ideal opportunity to experience the island at its most animated. Whether drawn by the spectacle of the Grand Allegoric Parade, the humour of the Slapstick Parade or the convivial atmosphere of the Carnival Market, visitors will find a celebration that balances exuberance with authenticity.
