Ubud Writers & Readers Festival
October 25, 2017 - October 29, 2017
The leading literary festival in southeast Asia, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival will come to the Indonesian island of Bali this October. The brainchild of Janet DeNeefe, co-founder of the Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati, the festival was initially conceived as a “healing project” in response to the first Bali bombing in 2002.
Now the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival has become one of the world’s most renowned literary and artistic events, described by the organisers as “an annual pilgrimage for lovers of literature and conversation”. Set over four days (October 25 to 29), the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is most definitely a celebration of the written – and spoken – word. This year, the festival has brought together authors, artists, thinkers and performers from all around the globe – from Indonesia to Iran, Canada to South Korea, the Philippines to Pakistan.
Headline acts include Scottish crime writer, Ian Rankin, whose Inspector Rebus is loved around the world, Canada’s latest literary sensation Madeleine Thien, Indonesian journalists and novelists Seno Gumira Ajidarma and Leila S. Chudori, Malaysian minority rights activist Marina Mahathir, and one of Indonesia’s feminist icon Nh. Dini
Bringing together some of the world’s most powerful voices in a melting pot of artists, authors, thinkers and performers, the Festival is a platform for meaningful exchange and cross-cultural dialogue. A place where artists and audiences alike can discuss shared inspirations, ideas and concerns, the Festival transcends cultural and geographical borders to create a truly global community.
Across five days, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival delivers an eclectic program of events – from fiery conversations to intimate literary lunches, gripping live performances to hands-on workshops.
