The Virunga Gorilla Marathon bursts with energy, adventure and purpose. This event blends high‑altitude challenge, volcanic scenery and the thrill of running through Uganda’s spectacular Virunga region. The Virunga Gorilla Marathon celebrates conservation, community and unforgettable landscapes, making it one of the most inspiring races we have written about recently.

History of the Virunga Gorilla Marathon

The Virunga Gorilla Marathon began as a bold idea to combine endurance sport with wildlife conservation. Admire how the organisers built an event that raises awareness of the endangered mountain gorillas while supporting local communities. Over the years, the Virunga Gorilla Marathon has grown into a celebrated fixture for runners who crave adventure, altitude and purpose.

Its history reflects a powerful partnership between athletes, conservationists and the people of southwestern Uganda and the shorter distances, such as the 6km, mean that it is open to a wide range of people.

What to Expect at this Event

The Virunga Gorilla Marathon delivers an experience that feels both exhilarating and deeply meaningful. Picture the excitement at dawn as runners gather in Kisoro, surrounded by mist‑covered volcanoes. The atmosphere buzzes with anticipation, and the event blends athletic challenge with cultural celebration. Runners can choose from several distances, including a full marathon, half marathon, 10 km, 6km and an ultra 112km option for those who want to push themselves even further.

Before race day, participants often join community visits, conservation talks and guided walks that introduce them to the region’s wildlife and culture. After the race, celebrations continue with music, local food and opportunities to explore the surrounding national parks. The Virunga Gorilla Marathon is more than a race; it is a full weekend of discovery, connection and unforgettable scenery.

Where does it Take Place?

The event unfolds in the Virunga Mountains, a chain of volcanoes shared by Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The marathon routes weave through the Ugandan side, centred around Kisoro, with different distances mapped across volcanic foothills and rural trails.

Registration is simple through the official event website. Fees vary by category, with East African residents paying lower rates and international runners paying higher tiers. Costs typically range from modest 6 km entry fees to higher marathon and ultra‑distance prices.

What to do in the Virunga Mountains

Virunga Mountains

The Virunga Mountains offer some of the most extraordinary experiences in East Africa. We recommend gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, where you can encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

The region also features golden monkey tracking, scenic hikes up volcanic peaks such as Mount Sabinyo and Mount Gahinga, and peaceful canoe trips on Lake Mutanda, to the north of Kisoro. Cultural visits with the Batwa community add depth to any trip, making the Virunga region a perfect blend of nature, adventure and heritage.

Flights to Uganda

From London, the most direct route is usually a flight from Heathrow to Entebbe with a short connection in hubs such as Doha or Addis Ababa. It takes 13 to 14 hours.

From Miami, New York or Los Angeles, the quickest journey typically involves one, or more, connections in Europe or the Middle East before landing in Entebbe. These routes balance travel time and convenience.

Once in Uganda, travellers usually take a domestic flight to Kisoro or drive through the scenic southwestern highlands to reach the marathon location.

Uganda Time

Uganda is two hours ahead of London and seven hours ahead of New York in summer time.
