World Pride 2026 Comes to Amsterdam

World Pride Amsterdam Pride

Amsterdam will take centre stage this summer as it hosts World Pride 2026, welcoming millions of visitors for a vibrant celebration of diversity, equality and inclusion. Running from 25 July to 8 August 2026, the event also marks the 30th anniversary of Amsterdam Pride, making it one of the city’s biggest cultural celebrations to date.

While Pride Month is celebrated around the world every June, Amsterdam has long carved out its own place on the international calendar by hosting its famous Pride celebrations later in the summer. The result is a festival that combines the city’s relaxed atmosphere with its unique waterways, culminating in the world-famous Canal Parade.

Celebrating 30 Years of Amsterdam Pride

The story of Amsterdam Pride began in 1996 with a simple but ambitious idea. Three friends, Siep de Haan, Peter Kramer and Ernst Verhoeven, wanted to create a Pride event that celebrated not only the LGBTQ+ community but also Amsterdam itself as a city of freedom, openness and acceptance.

Their vision produced something the world had never seen before, a Pride parade on water. Boats decorated in every colour imaginable sailed through Amsterdam’s historic canals, watched by around 20,000 spectators. Today, the Canal Parade attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and has inspired Pride celebrations across the globe.

From the beginning, the founders deliberately chose the name Amsterdam Pride rather than Gay Pride, reflecting their ambition to create an event where everyone felt welcome. Thirty years later, that spirit of inclusivity remains at the heart of the celebrations.

What to Expect at World Pride 2026

For two weeks, World Pride 2026 will fill Amsterdam with music, art, culture and celebration. Alongside the spectacular Canal Parade, visitors can enjoy exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances, film screenings, debates, sporting events and community gatherings across the city.

The Canal Parade remains the highlight of Amsterdam Pride. Unlike any other Pride event in the world, the procession takes place on the city’s UNESCO-listed canals as elaborately decorated boats glide through the heart of Amsterdam while crowds line the waterways in celebration.

Neighbourhoods across the Dutch capital will also host street parties, live performances and family-friendly events, giving visitors the chance to experience Amsterdam’s welcoming atmosphere beyond the main celebrations.

When Is Pride Month?

A common question is when is Pride Month? Pride Month takes place every June, commemorating the Stonewall Uprising of June 1969 in New York City, a defining moment in the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Although many destinations celebrate Pride during June, Amsterdam traditionally hosts its flagship Pride festival in late July and early August. This timing allows the city to make the most of the summer weather while showcasing its famous canals. In 2026, the celebrations will be even more significant as Amsterdam welcomes visitors from around the world for World Pride 2026.

More Than a Celebration

Hosting World Pride 2026 is both a celebration of Amsterdam Pride’s remarkable journey over the past three decades and a reminder that the values of equality, respect and inclusion remain as important as ever.

For visitors, it is an opportunity to experience Amsterdam at its most colourful. Whether watching the iconic Canal Parade, exploring cultural exhibitions, joining community events or simply soaking up the atmosphere in the city’s cafés and canalside streets, there will be plenty of reasons to visit.

With its unique blend of history, culture and celebration, World Pride 2026 promises to be one of Europe’s standout events of the year. For more inspiration on what to do in Amsterdam, read Rob Spellman’s Amsterdam with No Rijks Turn.
