Zurich Tanzt Dance Festival 2019
May 3 - May 5
Zurich will be the home to a city-wide festival of dance in May. Held from May 3 to 5, Zurich Tanzt assembles some of the finest contemporary dancers in the Swiss city, to display their innovative dance routines and practices.
Now in its seventh year, Zurich Tanzt takes place over three days with original works as well as an extensive programme of courses that everyone can join in.
Headlining the contemporary dance festival last year were Delréves from Spain and Benjamin Vandervalle from Begium. In addition to the performances, there will also be guided walks through Zurich, parties and more than 160 courses introducing dance from ballet to break dance, and flamenco to acro yoga to young and old alike, for all levels. (Details of the 2019 Programme will be available in March).
Zurich Tanzt is more than a dance festival as the organisers wish to make a bridge between the performing arts and social issues. To coincide with the five hundredth anniversary of the Zurich reformation, dancers will take over Zurich’s main station and turn it to a dance floor on the evening of Saturday May 5, in an exploration of the theme of freedom of movement. Tackling the same issue choreography Martin Schick will present Freedom of Movement, which deals with the contentious and topical subject of migration, where various Swiss dancers provide their personal interpretation of what are the main issues revolving around asylum seekers.
Last year, Zurich Tanzt attracted over 18,000 people with performances in some 30 venues across the city. It is supported by Stadt Zürich Kultur and various other sponsors. This is a spectacular explosion of dance in the heart of Switzerland and an occasion that is well worth joining in, if you happen to be in Zurich during the first weekend in May.
