SUMMARY:Nabana no Sato Japanese Light Festival
DESCRIPTION:Nabana no Sato\, a botanical garden in the Japanese prefecture of Mie\, is home each year to one of the country’s best and biggest winter light festivals. During several months\, magical light tunnels\, animated light shows and millions of LED lights immerse Nabana no Sato into an endless sea of light. \nNabana no Sato flower park and botanical gardens\nThe popular Nabana no Sato flower park comprises of several sections each dedicated to flowers. Its impressive number of flower varieties makes it possible to admire different species of flowers at different times throughout the entire year – even as a regular visitor\, you’d be hard pressed to find the same types of flowers during different visits. \nSome of Nabana no Sato’s popular yearly events include Ajisai Matsuri which is a large exhibition of hydrangeas at the beginning of summer\, the Sakura cherry blossom season starting in spring\, and other events involving tulips\, dahlias\, daisies\, pansies and more. It’s also known for its impressive greenhouses. Non-flower attractions in the park include an Onsen or Japanese hot spring\, and an iconic 45-metre-high observation platform called Mount Fuji from where visitors can get a terrific bird’s eye view onto the myriad of colours inside Nabana no Sato. \nBut the park’s most popular highlight of the year is without doubt its Nabana no Sato Winter Light Festival. This edition is the park’s 24th anniversary since its opening and will see more than eight million LED lights illuminated each night under the general theme of nature and flowers\, turning it into one of Japan’s most famous winter light festivals. Each section presents a different “landscape”\, amongst which the most notable are a magnificent 120-metre-long and 5-metre-wide river of lights – installed on the central pond of the park – that regularly changes colour\, as well as two impressive light tunnels stretching over 100 metres. \n\nIf you like Japanese colour then don’t miss the Cherry Blossom Festival Japan\, or the equally colourful Japan Penis Festival Kanamara Matsuri. \n\nThe park’s biggest Winter Light Festival attraction is probably its elaborate animated light show at the main venue where an entire field lights up with various animated scenes of nature or famous landmarks such as Mount Fuji\, each year to a different theme. \nIf all this light energy might worry you about its ecological impact\, then rest assured\, the entire installation runs on solar energy thanks to the solar panels installed throughout Nabana no Sato. Join the thousands of spectators who come here to enjoy the sweet flagrance of the flowers as they stroll warmly bundled up through the cold winter air admiring the lights extravaganza. \nJapan Light Tunnels at Nabana no Sato\n\nThe two Japan light tunnels at Nabana no Sato are arguably the festival’s most characteristic features. The first one\, the “Tunnel of Light”\, stretches no less than 200 metres across the entire park and consists of some 5.8 million LED lights\, each representing small flower petals. \n\nFor more winter fun\, check out Japan Winter Festivals: Naked Men and Sake.\n\n\nMore recently a second light tunnel has been crafted which is some 100 metres long and made up of 700\,000 light bulbs. Called the “Kawazu Sakura Tunnel”\, it is made to mimic the colours of the Kawazu cherry tree and\, unsurprisingly\, is very popular with couples for its romantic photo shoot opportunities. \nThe installation gradually changes colour to symbolise the cherry blossom’s evolution throughout the season. \nFlower-shaped LED lights. Image by Panparinda\nWhen does the Nabana no Sato Winter Light Festival 2025 take place?\nThe Winter Light Festival starts in 18 October 2025 and runs through to 31 May 2026. \nWhere is Nabana no Sato?\nNabana no Sato is located at 270 Urushibata\, Komae\, in Kuwana City. The park is open from Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 9pm\, and at weekends and public holidays from 9am to 10pm. The light displays are turned on a few minutes after dark. \nDuring the Winter Light Festival\, admission to the park is 2\,300 yen which includes a 1\,000-yen voucher to spend at Nabana no Sato’s restaurants\, cafés\, beer garden and souvenir shops. At weekends and public holidays it tends to be quite busy so if you prefer quieter moments then consider visiting during weekdays. \n\nFor winter sports in Japan\, join Mark Bibby Jackson on his Niseko Ski Japan adventure. \n\nWinter wonderlight land at Nabana no Sato. SUMMARY:Cannes Film Festival 2026\, France
DESCRIPTION:Probably the most famous – and certainly the most glitzy – film festivals in the world\, the Cannes Film Festival\, or Cannes Festival to give its official title\, is held at the coastal town in southern France in May. \nWhat is the Cannes Film Festival?\nThe festival is an annual\, invitation only event for the finest films around the world\, held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes. \nUntil 2003\, it was called the International Film Festival (Festival International du Film)\, before changing name to the Cannes Festival (Festival de Cannes). \nIn addition to the Official Film Selection where the selected films are screened\, there is a series of fringe events\, such as International Critics Week and Directors’ Fortnight. The event has become the busiest market in the film industry globally. \nGrand Théâtre Lumière Credit : Eliott Chalier / FDC\nHistory of the Cannes Film Festival\nAlthough the first Festival was held in 1946\, the origins of the festival date back some eight years prior to then. \nHeld in 1938\, the Venice Mostra was the first international film competition\, although under pressure from Hitler and Mussolini\, the winners were hardly impartial awards\, Nazi propagenda film Olympia by Leni Riefenstahl was one of the two films to reap the Mussolini Cup. \nWhile returning by train from the festival Philippe Erlanger conceived the idea of truly independent film awards. \nOriginally the festival was to be held in Biarritz\, but supporters of Cannes won the day\, and the first festival was slated on 1 September 1939 – the same date as the Venice Mostra. Unfortunately\, events elsewhere in Europe forced the delay and ultimately cancellation of the festival. It was on 1 September 1939 that Hitler invaded Poland. \nIn 2002\, the initial Palme d’or for the aborted 1939 Cannes Festival was awarded to Cecil B DeMille’s Union Pacific by a jury presided over by Jean D’Ormesson. Other films which would have appeared at the ’39 festival include The Wizard of Oz and The Four Feathers. There was actually one private screening held\, of The Hunchback of Notre Dame\, which consequently became the first ever film in competition at the Cannes Festival. \n \nRed carpet at Cannes film festival credit : Christophe Bouillon / FDC \nThe first festival finally took place on 20 September 1946\, with films from 19 countries participating\, each film received a Grand Prix. \nOver the years\, some of the world’s greatest directors\, Roberto Rossellini\, Billy Wilder\, George Cukor\, David Lean and Jean Renoir have been part of the Cannes story\, as well as actors from Grace Kelly to Gina Lollobrigida and Cary Grant to Kirk Douglas. Even Pablo Picasso attended. \nThe first Palme d’or was awarded to Marty by Delbert Mann in 1955. \nThe festival has always courted controversy. In 1959\, the festival was interrupted when directors including Malle\, Truffaut and Godard stormed the stage during a screening of Peppermint Frappé by Carlos Saura. \nWinners of the Cannes Film Festival such as Pulp Fiction\, La Dolce Vita and Taxi Driver were not exactly well-received at the time. \nIn 1997\, marking the festival’s 50th anniversary\, Ingmar Bergmann was awarded the Palme des Palmes\, by his fellow directors\, although the Swede was not available to attend the ceremony himself. \nOther major European film festivals include: the Venice International Film Festival\, the Berlinale and the BFI London Film Festival. \nCannes Film Festival 2026\nThe Cannes Film Festival schedule is here. \nWhile in Cannes you might wish to stay at the Hotel Barrière Le Majestic. \nCannes Film Festival Awards\nThe principle Cannes Film Festival awards are the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm)\, Grand Prix (Grand Prize of the Festival)\, Prix du Jury (Jury Prize). \n \nCannes Film Festival 2026 Dates\nWhen is the Cannes Film Festival? It is from 12 to 23 May 2026. \nCannes Film Festival Tickets\nOnly those with official accreditation can get Cannes Film Festival tickets. Click here to access the Cannes Festival online ticket office. \nFlights to Cannes\nNice airport is some 27 kilometres from the heart of Cannes. Alternatively you could catch the direct train from Paris\, Gare de Lyon which takes about five-and-a-half hours. \n\nFor more information on the Cannes French Film Festival\nVisit the official Cannes festival website. SUMMARY:Cambridge Beer Festival 2026\, Cambridge\, England
DESCRIPTION:Cambridge Beer Festival 2026 takes place in Cambridge on 18–23 May 2026. \nCambridge Beer Festival 2026 Theme\nEach year\, the leading British Beer Festival takes on a fresh theme\, and in 2026 it’s one that promises a nostalgic toast to two of Britain’s best-loved bears\, both celebrating 100-year milestones. \nFirst up is Winnie-the-Pooh\, the creation of A. A. Milne\, whose timeless stories first appeared a century ago. The honey-loving bear continues to charm readers young and old with his gentle adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood\, alongside friends Christopher Robin\, Piglet\, Tigger\, Eeyore\, Kanga and Roo. From searching for snacks to playing Poohsticks by the river\, life in the forest is always quietly eventful. \nSharing the spotlight is Paddington Bear\, who first came to life thanks to Michael Bond\, born in 1926. Found at Paddington Station “from darkest Peru”\, Paddington made his debut in A Bear Called Paddington in 1958 and has since become a cultural icon. With a fondness for marmalade sandwiches and a knack for accidental chaos\, he has starred in more than 29 books\, as well as films and a West End stage production. \nThe theme will run throughout the festival\, featuring limited-edition glasses\, programmes\, posters and other collectables. Visitors can also look out for specially brewed beers\, each one playfully named in honour of the two famous bears—easy to spot in the festival guide. \nStrangers’ Blonde\nStrangers’ Blonde is a new Anglo-Belgian collaboration beer that brings together the best of British and Belgian brewing traditions\, brewed in the Norwich area. The beer will make its first public appearance at the Cambridge Beer Festival. Brewed locally in Norfolk\, Strangers’ Blonde is a Belgian-style blonde ale made with UK-sourced malts\, grains and hops\, including heritage varieties that add depth and character. It’s fermented with a classic Belgian yeast strain chosen for its signature fruity esters and gentle spicy notes\, giving the beer its distinctive profile. \nWhere Is Cambridge Beer Festival 2026\nIt is hosted at Jesus Green and is organised/listed by Cambridge CAMRA. SUMMARY:RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026
DESCRIPTION:RHS Chelsea Flower Show\, the world’s most famous horticultural show\, returns from 19-23 May\, 2026. \nAs the climate crisis bites it affects gardeners and nature in numerous ways. This show recognises this and it also acknowledges the role of gardens in fighting climate change and in protecting species diversity. \nAs closeness to nature is linked to human well-being\, there is also a focus on urban gardens. This includes greening unused spaces in the city and recycling old materials to make them part of a modern garden. \nWilliam and Catherine the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge\, May 20\, 2019. It moved to the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea in 1913 and\, apart from breaks during the world wars\, it has been held here ever since. \nGarden gnomes are banned from the event for the unpardonable crime of being “brightly coloured mythical creatures”\, but were allowed for the centenary year in 2013 when specially commissioned Duke and Duchess of Cambridge gnomes were auctioned in support of the campaign to create more gardens in schools. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cA7OKHmJZz0 \nAs the Flower Show is in the grounds of the Royal Hospital you may also meet the Chelsea Pensioners at the festival. SUMMARY:Lincoln Beer Festival 2026\, Lincoln\, England
DESCRIPTION:Lincoln Beer Festival runs from 21 to 23 May 2026. Entry is £6\, with CAMRA members admitted free. A commemorative glass costs £4\, refundable if returned. \n\n\n\n\nThe Lincoln Beer Festival has become a much-loved fixture in the city’s cultural and social calendar. The Lincoln branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) first staged the event back in 1977\, held in the upstairs room of the Stag’s Head pub on Newport. At the time\, the focus was firmly on supporting the handful of remaining independent breweries as they fought to survive against the dominance of national brands. \nToday\, the festival reflects something broader – the resurgence of British brewing and the remarkable variety now produced by craft brewers across the country. \nAcross three days\, around 2\,000 visitors are expected to attend\, drawn from Lincoln and far beyond\, all coming to enjoy the atmosphere and explore the drinks on offer. For regular drinkers of real ale\, cider and perry\, there is a wide and often unusual selection\, with many beers rarely seen in this part of the UK. Local breweries are well represented too\, while newcomers can discover just how diverse traditional British drinks have become. \nWhere Is the Lincoln Beer Festival 2026\nThe 44th Lincoln Beer Festival will once again take place at SouthSide\, the striking former St Katherine’s Church at the junction of High Street\, South Park and Newark Road. \nChosen Charity\nFor 2026\, proceeds will go to the Bomber County Gateway Trust\, known for its life-size Avro Lancaster sculpture positioned beside the A46 at Norton Disney\, which also features in the festival logo. \n\n\n\n\nTimings\n\nThurs 21st May – Noon til 11pm\nFriday 22nd May – Noon til 11pm\nSaturday 23rd May – Noon til 9pm\n\nPrices\nCAMRA Members – FREE –Join Here. \nNon-Members – £6.00 (free after 9pm on 21st & 22nd). SUMMARY:Erlanger Bergkirchweih 2026\, Erlangen\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:Erlangen’s Bergkirchweih is one of Franconia’s classic beer events\, centred on the city’s historic beer cellars and outdoor seating under trees. This year it marks its 271st year. \nRunning from 21 May–1 June 2026\, the ‘Berg’ is as much about the beer-garden atmosphere as it is about the fairground rides and traditional rituals. Expect a strong local feel\, with music\, breweries and cellar gardens stretching along the Burgberg. With nearly two weeks of celebrations\, it’s a brilliant choice if you want a renowned German beer festival that’s big on tradition\, but smaller and more local in tone than the mega-events in Munich or Stuttgart.

SUMMARY:Visak Bochea Day\, Cambodia 2026
DESCRIPTION:As the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar\, Visak Bochea Day is celebrated with great revere. It sees celebrators dress in white and dish out a form of rice pudding called kheer. In the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh\, lively processions snake through the city on their way to pagodas. \nVisak Bochea Day : Buddha’s birthday\nCelebrated by Buddhists across the globe\, Visak Bochea Day is an important date for worshippers as it represents Buddha’s birthday. \nWhen is Visak Bochea Day? \nThe date varies as it runs off the lunar calendar. However\, it falls on the first full moon in the fourth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. This is typically in May. While every full moon is regarded as sacred by Buddhists\, this one holds a special place in their hearts as the moon of the month of Vesak is the day Buddha was born\, attained enlightenment and attained parinirvana upon his death. \nCelebrations  \nThroughout the celebrations\, a dharma wheel features heavily. The wooden wheel represents Buddha’s teachings during his path to enlightenment\, with its eight spokes symbolizing the religion’s eightfold path.

SUMMARY:Lithuanian Beer Festival 2026\, Vilnius\, Lithuania
DESCRIPTION:Vilnius’s Kalnų Park turns into a meeting point for fans of home-grown brewing at Lithuanian Beer Festival (Lietuviško alaus festivalis) 2026. \nHeld on 22–23 May 2026 at the Kalnų Park stage\, the festival focuses on beer brewed in Lithuania and brings together a broad mix of local producers\, from established names to smaller\, experimental breweries. It is billed as the only festival that unites practically all Lithuanian beer producers\, from tiny village breweries to bigger-city names. The organisers position it as a chance to meet brewers directly and explore local flavour without rushing from stand to stand. The setting is deliberately laid-back: taste at your own pace\, chat with brewers\, and enjoy the open-air park atmosphere close to the Old Town. Food trucks and snack zones are planned on site\, and live music is scheduled across both days to round out the weekend feel. Friday runs 15:00–22:00\, with Saturday open 12:00–22:00. SUMMARY:Cooper's Hill Cheese Rolling Gloucestershire
DESCRIPTION:Held in the village of Brockworth in Gloucestershire\, the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling and Wake is normally held on the Spring Bank Holiday Monday each year. \nWhat started off as a local tradition has become an international event\, drawing thousands of people from around the world. Previous winners have come from New Zealand\, the US\, Australia and Nepal. \nCheese Rolling Race\nA round of Double Gloucester cheese weighing 3 to 4 kilos (or 7 to 9 pounds) is rolled down the steep Cooper’s Hill in Brockworth\, pursued by the competitors. The aim is to catch the cheese\, but as the round can reach speeds up to 70 mph\, this is most unlikely. \nCooper’s Hill – a steep slippery slide to the finish line\nIn 2013\, Australian Caleb Stalder caught a cheese made of lightweight foam that had been introduced for safety reasons. \nThe winner is the first person over the finishing line. \nIn 2019 there were five cheese rolling races\, including one for women\, which was won by Flo Early\, her fourth victory\, making her the most successful female cheese rolling chaser. The male record stands with Chris Anderson who has won the race 22 times\, although he did not compete in 2019 following his retirement from the event. \nAfter the race competitors generally retire to the Cross Hands and Victoria pubs in Brockworth. \nOrigins of the Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling Festival\nInitially the cheese rolling festival took place on Whit Monday. Its origins are disputed. Some claim it was commenced to maintain a right to graze on common land. Others say its origins are more pagan. It’s possible that it stems from people rolling burning brushwood down the hill to represent the start of the new year. \nWhatever its origins\, the first recorded cheese rolling in Gloucestershire was in 1826\, although the tradition clearly predated it. \nChris Anderson\, King of the Cheese\nThe Cheese\nThe cheese is decorated with ribbons and supplied by Diana Smart\, a local cheesemaker\, and her son Rod\, as it has since 1988. \nWhen is the Cheese Rolling 2026?\nThe races will be on 25 May\, with the first race commencing at noon. Organisers suggest you arrive by 10am. \nCooper’s Hill Safety Concerns\nThe cheese rolling chase is not for the fainthearted; many people are injured each year\, due to the steepness of Cooper’s Hill. Several times the cheese rolling races have been cancelled due to injuries\, although on those occasions a cheese has been rolled down the hill in order to preserve grazing rights. \nFirst Aid is provided by St John’s Ambulance\, and there are several catchers from the local rugby club and young farmers. \n\nIf you think this is crazy then why not try bog snorkelling in Wales?\n\nOther Cheese Rolling Events\nSince 2002 there has been a cheese rolling competition in Chester. The circuit here is more flat with no injuries reported since 2006.
