A medieval minster town aims to turn the clock back to the glamorous heyday of air travel with a new vintage café set to take off in the East Yorkshire town of Beverley in December.
Former air hostess, and food and drink entrepreneur, Lucie Mountain will be offering visitors a taste of the 1950s by recreating the glory days of air travel at her new aviation-themed café and bar in the historic market town.
Boarding will be announced shortly, ready for take off on 2 December when The Cockpit Cafe will offer coffee, and booze, for high flyers… with staff dressed as 1950s-style “trolley dollies” and food from genuine airline trolleys.
The café will serve refreshments and food throughout the day, before transforming into an evening bar, offering a range of alcoholic beverages including beer, cocktails, wines and spirits.

“When Hull was chosen to be the UK’s latest city of culture a few pairs of eyebrows were raised – mine for one. I had spent three years in the mid-80s a short distance away in York electing pints over lectures as I drifted my way through university with scarcely a thought for visiting the coastal city. Whitby, Scarborough even Bridlington felt my tread, but Hull never even appeared on my radar.”
Bringing the world to Beverley, the quirky venue – located at Wednesday Market – will offer food and drink from across the globe, recreating transatlantic tipples and cocktails from glitzy travel hotspots such as New York.
A key element of the Cockpit Café experience will also be the 1950s décor, reflecting a time when air travel was glamorous and a holiday abroad was a luxury.
Lucie, a former air hostess and marketing manager for Eastern Airways – who also has more than six years’ industry experience in the food and drink sector – aims to make the Cockpit Cafe “a destination to be seen, and to be seen in”.
“I wanted to create a unique atmosphere which will differentiate The Cockpit Café from other food and drink venues in Yorkshire. With a background in food and drink and travel, The Cockpit Café is an accumulation of all the things I’m passionate about,” said Lucie.
The cafe will also offer live music, including 50s style Jazz, swing, vintage singers and a unique modern twist on the popular genres.
Nestling on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, and under the shadow of its 13th century Minster, Beverley is a popular visitor destination, thanks to its narrow streets, antique shops, historic buildings and a diverse range of year-round events.
The picturesque town is also gaining a reputation as a ‘set-jetting’ destination, with the Minster doubling as Westminster Abbey and St James’s Palace for ITV’s hit series Victoria, starring Jenna Coleman, and also used for BBC TV’s recent historic drama Gunpowder, featuring Kit Harington.
