Lithuania Christmas markets are amongst the best in Europe. From the cosmopolitan capital Vilnius to the buzzing city of Kaunas, Lithuania offers the perfect festive escape with direct flights from the UK.

Lithuania Christmas markets – Vilnius

Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to Christmas markets in Lithuania and the capital Vilnius is home to one of Europe’s most lavish. A huge Christmas tree covered with thousands of sparkling lights (70,000 in 2017 to be exact) can be found in Cathedral Square, surrounded by different market stalls offering traditional festive treats, handcrafted souvenirs and plenty of stocking stuffers. Other markets across the city include City Hall Square and in the Bernardinai Gardens.

The market at Cathedral Square is open daily from 1 December 2018 – 7 January 2019 and is a favourite amongst tourists and locals alike. The biggest market in Vilnius, the tree will be lit on the evening of the 1 December 2018 when the festivities will begin. Another market is found in Town Hall Square, which is lined with picturesque chalet-inspired stalls offering more souvenirs and tasty treats. This market is open daily from 1 December – 7 January 2019. For a locally-focused market, visit the Etmonų Christmas Market from 7-8 December 2019, where you’ll find bars open on the ground floor and the market one floor above.

Lithuania Christmas markets – Kaunas

Famous for its postmodern architecture and upcoming street art scene, Lithuania’s second largest city – Kaunas – also offers a wealth of festive fun for visitors this year.

In Kaunas’ Town Hall Square, the Christmas tree will also be lit on 1 December 2018. The theme for this year’s tree is “Queen of the Winter” and will be turned in to a work of art by artist Jolanta Šmidtienė. The city is well known for its innovative Christmas trees, which began in 2011 with a Christmas tree made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. Last year the lights of the tree ran on eco-friendly energy made from coffee grounds and this year is expected to be no different. The Christmas tree is still under wraps but will include a social element.

Town Hall Square forms the heart of the city’s festivities with a market offering sweet treats, presents and the chance to meet Santa Claus.
