Fotografiska, the internationally recognised museum of photography with its roots in Stockholm, recently opened a gallery-cum-restaurant in Tallinn, Estonia.
A meeting place for art, good food, music and design, the Fotografiska Tallinn Photography Museum includes an exhibition and event area, a café, a restaurant and a fine-art photography shop.
The first Fotografiska opened in Stockholm in 2010. After Tallinn, the museum will visit New York and London.
The new restaurant, which opened in June 2019 has a zero-waste mindset and focuses on traditional Estonian cuisine. The restaurant applies the ‘from leaf to root, from nose to tail’ principle and uses fresh local produce to the maximum – whether preparing a dish in the kitchen or mixing a cocktail behind the bar.
The restaurant is located in Telliskivi Creative City. Located in a former industrial complex on the borders of the Tallinn’s Old Town and Pelgulinna and Kalamaja districts, this is the largest creative centre in Estonia, consisting of studios, creative companies and offices of NGOs. There are several small designer stores and studios, 10 unique eating and drinking places, photo galleries and lots of interesting street art.
Nearly 600 cultural events take place annually in the district and a flea market is organised every Saturday. In the complex, travellers will find the Club of Different Rooms, Theatre Vaba Lava and the theatre Sõltumatu Tantsu Lava. The industrial complex has been brought back to life, attracting the most colourful crowd, including youngsters, eccentric artists, hipsters and designers.
The district remains self-funded (no public funds contribute to its operations), which ensures the founder, Jaanus Juss has control over which creative businesses are able to open inside.
