Kick a Sledge in Norway

northern lights

Right in the heart of Northern Norway, at the entrance to Lyngen Fjord, Summit & Blue (01243 929121; www.summitandblue.com ) offers a 3-night stay at Arctic Panorama Lodge. Surrounded by majestic mountains and the Arctic sea the lodge is perfect for winter activities including snow shoeing, ice fishing, dog sledding and the chance to learn to ‘Kick Sledge’.

A kick sledge or ‘spark’ is a small sled consisting of a chair mounted on a pair of flexible metal runners which extend backward to about twice the chair’s length. The sled is propelled by kicking (“sparke” or “sparka” in the Scandinavian languages) the ground by foot. You can sled directly from the Arctic Panorama Lodge and is suitable for families.

Svein, the larger than life (literally) owner of Arctic Panorama Lodge described it as “used for snow and ice transport where you are the engine!”.

The six-room lodge has a living room with an open fire and beautiful panoramic views facing the fjord and mountains. It’s perfect for families and can easily be twinned with a stay in Tromsø or even Oslo and Bergen.

Prices start from £1000 per person including flights, 3-nights in a twin room on a full board basis, return transfers from Tromso, two hours storytelling about the history of the island and visiting the local museum, a Kick Sledge course, snowshoe trekking with a guide, a Snowmobile safari and daily opportunity for a Northern Lights hunt with guide.
