Peru is a South American country of dramatic landscapes, ranging from high altitude cities in the Andes, together with Amazon rain forests and its renowned Inca sites.
Lima, the capital of Peru, is interesting archaeologically, with its well preserved central colonial buildings. At the foot hills of the Andes it is situated on the banks of the Pacific. The Plaza Major, with its classical buildings, is in the centre of the city, and most of the famous sites are within easy reach, including the various palaces and Lima Cathedral. Try a pisco sour whilst sitting in the bar of a 17th century palace.
High in the Peruvian Andes, 3,399 metres above sea level, Cusco is famed for once being the capital of the Inca civilisation. Sit in the Plaza de Armas and view the old, balconied wooden buildings and the remnants of the Inca city wall. Visit the Santo Domingo Convent. There are many restaurants in small alleyways and squares. Be warned, one of the local delicacies is roasted guinea pig.
Renowned worldwide, this famous Inca site is one of the most visited in the world. The ancient mountain is situated in tropical forests and stands 2,430 metres above sea level. If you can beat the many tourists by arriving at dawn you will be richly rewarded.
