Pivofest Prilep is a prominent summer beer festival in the city of Prilep, bringing an open-air festival atmosphere to the town centre for several days. Every July, the city of Prilep hosts Pivofest, North Macedonia’s largest beer and barbecue festival. Bringing together cold beer, sizzling grilled food and live music, the free festival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the Balkans and beyond, transforming the city centre into one huge open-air celebration.

What to Expect at Pivofest Prilep

Pivofest takes place across Prilep’s central squares and boulevards, where breweries, barbecue vendors and entertainment stages create a lively festival atmosphere. Visitors can sample a wide selection of Macedonian beers alongside international brands while enjoying the city’s famous grilled meats, including kebapi, pork, sausages and other local specialities cooked over charcoal.

Live music is an important part of the festival, with leading Macedonian and regional artists performing each evening on outdoor stages. Alongside the concerts, visitors will find street performers, family entertainment, artisan stalls and plenty of opportunities to experience the warm hospitality for which North Macedonia is known.

The festival’s central location also makes it easy to explore Prilep’s cafés, historic Ottoman Clock Tower and traditional Old Bazaar before returning for an evening of music, food and beer.

The History of Pivofest

Pivofest was launched in 2002 by the Municipality of Prilep in partnership with local businesses to celebrate the city’s long brewing tradition and renowned barbecue culture. Since then, it has grown into one of the largest festivals in North Macedonia and a major event on the Balkan summer calendar, attracting well over 200,000 visitors in many editions. Over the years, dozens of breweries and restaurants have taken part, while leading musicians from across the former Yugoslavia have helped establish Pivofest’s reputation as both a food and music festival.

Prilep itself has a proud brewing heritage. The city’s brewery, Prilepska Pivarnica, was founded in 1924 and remains one of North Macedonia’s best-known beer producers, making brewing an important part of the city’s identity.
