Lonely Planet writer Nick Ray returns to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm free from tourists, as the coronavirus pandemic prohibits international travellers from visiting one of the marvels of the world.
In addition to claiming almost 200,000 lives globally, the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the travel and tourism industry. With half the world imposing some form of lockdown, often travelling away from your own home let alone to a country on the other side of the world is impossible. Many have turned to virtual travel. Others have been fortunate enough to benefit from the treasures on their own doorstep.
Cambodia Lonely Planet author Nick Ray visited the temples of Angkor in April, to see the complex even more deserted than when he first visited in 1995.
Enjoy this amazing video he took of his trip and see Angkor Wat like never before.
Alternatively, you can listen to Nick’s thoughts on the current situation of the tourism industry in the kingdom as he chats with Travel Begins at 40 Founder Mark Bibby Jackson in our first ever Travel Begins at 40 podcast – Cambodia and the Coronavirus.
